In the last couple of weeks, days were dim and all but inviting to shoot fashion photos. Melancholia and, in view of the present state of the world, plain pessimism were lurking in the dusk. Quite naturally I withstood the temptation of listlessness by becoming hyper-alert to the few beams of sunlight breaking through the clouds. The weather reports were a great help for me to take creative advantage of those rare moments of sunshine to ensure a fine photographic exposure.
Today’s photos document one of my efforts to blow off the world’s omnipresent and unrelenting gloom with some Scandinavian brightness. An uncomplicated, light colour palette consisting of lots of white and a bit of grey and honey lifted my spirits whereas some soft fur (faux of course) kept me warm and cosy. I spotted this River Island vest months ago already (see this edit on my blog) and I’m afraid I succumbed to the temptation. This outfit also would have looked lovely with a pair of over-the-knee boots like these or these ones, but for now they are still to be situated on my “objects of desire” list rather than in my closet.
I gave my outfit the ultimate Scandinavian finishing touch with an imaginative minimalist bamboo necklace reminiscent of the Olympic sign of intertwined rings. To me it symbolizes the cooperation and solidarity between all continents, races and peoples, regardless of creed or ideology. It is a creation of One Happy Leaf, founded by an Australian jewellery designer with an educational background in environmental science. She designs jewellery from eco-friendly bamboo wood. (Other favourites of mine are her friendship necklace and her everyday ring. I have a weakness for brands that invest in social responsibility and One Happy Leaf is one of them. A portion of its sales is donated to organisations involved in the rescue and rehabilitation of abused animals (such as Animals Australia, World Animal Protection and Free the Bears). When I think of the countless people of the world who like One Happy Leaf try to make the world a better place to live in for the simple reason that there is no Planet B, the words of a beautiful poem by the French poet Paul Fort emerge and dispel melancholia and gloom.
“La ronde autour du monde” by Paul Fort
Si toutes les filles du monde
Voulaient s’donner la main,
Tout autour de la mer,
Elles pourraient faire une ronde.
Si tous les gars du monde
Voulaient bien étr’marins,
Il f’raient avec leurs barques
Un joli pont sur l’onde.
Alors on pourrait faire
Une ronde autour du monde,
Si tous les gens du monde
Voulaient s’donner la main.

Your texts are always really inspiring. I like the poem (or song?) very much. An instigation for solidarity.
Thank you. Victoria.
Thank you! I think it’s a poem but perhaps someone should make a song of it… Xx
I do like the minimalism of the jewel very much, the wood material and the earth colors. I’ll suggest this as a present from my boyfriend :)
