Rectangular ponds surrounded by immaculately arranged plants, bushes of giant damask roses and riots of blooming jasmines, dun-coloured courtyards, stairways with roofs of green, lofty trees bending under the weight of ripe oranges, well-groomed hedges and archways, and an exquisite (almost clichéd) view of the Nasrid Palace in the near distance below. The Generalife gardens provided for quite a backdrop when shooting this outfit.
The first thing that came to my mind to describe it, was “Eden”. I discovered later that the Generalife was in fact designed to be an earthly paradise in the shape of a unique, luxurious leisure villa for the kings of Granada. The name “Generalife” is derived from the Arabic Jannat al-Arif or “garden of the architect”, which could possibly be a poetical allusion to God the creator, the architect.
The photos tell most of the story here (if you can’t get enough of this Eden – I’ll post a photo diary of the Alhambra and Generalife later), but I must add that the visuals are just a fraction of its sensory delights. Imagine the soft murmur of the fountains and ponds, the perfume of a thousand blooms in spring, the aromatic fragrance of the herb gardens. Everything in these pristine gardens is a delight to the senses.
I was wearing this timeless figure-hugging River Island dress with a touch of French glamour. In order to let the dress shine, I paired it with simple black accessories: a vintage clutch, a pearl necklace parading as a bracelet for the occasion, and elegant suede pumps. (For the sake of mystery, I’ll leave in the dark whether or not these shoes were the ones that walked me up the hills of the Generalife.) I love how the gold-tone hoop detail adds a slightly frivolous Roman element defying the classic aesthetic of the dress. Think: Brigitte Bardot meets Julius Caesar. And all of that in the Garden of Eden! Quite some anachronisms and anatopisms we have here, but a prolific phantasy often opens windows on unexpected horizons.
