We went to discover the Plaza de España (“Spain Square” in English), a relict of Seville’s 1929 international fair, at the first blush of day so we could soak up and photograph its splendour without being disturbed by tourists.
When we reached the square, the curved row of benches covered with fabulous varicoloured azulejos (painted ceramic tiles) was still covered in the shadow of the principal building. As some of the bridges and balustrades more towards the middle of the plaza were already catching the first sunrays, we decided to move forward a few steps and shoot those first (you’ll see the result of that in a next post). Just as we were satisfied with the photos we had snapped there, we suddenly noticed that the benches had moved out of the shadow and were being lit up by the first slivers of sunlight.
Quick as a whistle I changed outfits and we ran to the benches. The glistening colours of the sequence of azulejos tiles provided for the perfect backdrop for my colourful, summery patchwork dress. Its easy, flowy shape, length (or rather lack of it) and unconventional patchwork pattern make it totally inappropriate for any professional setting but all the more appropriate for relaxed holiday strolls. In fact, wearing something that would be unthinkable in the office, doubles the holiday feeling for me…
With every minute that passed, the sun was rising higher on the horizon and the reflection of the light on the rainbow-coloured tiles was getting harsher. Only five minutes later, the light had changed completely and the sheer magic had trickled away. It was again a reminder of how fleeting these moments of beauty are, and how handy photography comes in to cheerfully bamboozle the laws of time.
